Ntengwe
Grassroots women in our communities are driving the change we need now – preserving and protecting, wildlife, natural habitats and resources
We build alliances to advance efforts to win food sovereignty, environmental and climate justice, women’s economic empowerment, and challenge the greatest threats to ensure a healthy future for people and nature
Ranging from policy advocacy to grassroots organizing, we work through collaborative processes with government, partner organizations and networks to support women-led efforts in implementing key conservation projects, help reduce human-wildlife conflicts, and enhance climate resilience through climate-smart farming for increased income and food security.

Nature Conservation
We work with marginalized groups, women and girls to lead in the field of conservation by providing them with environmental education and resources to implement projects.
We use a series of tools for community-led resilience building that puts marginalized groups, grassroots women and girls at the centre. These tools, such as community risk and opportunity mapping, local-to-local dialogues, grassroots community learning platforms, peer learning exchanges, and monitoring groups help to create a body of knowledge grounded in local data and to leverage partnerships in development.

Community Resilience and Women’s Leadership
We use Community Resilience Funds to enable grassroots women groups to collectively make plans and initiate Locally Led Adaptation strategies and practices that reduce vulnerabilities arising from climate disasters and biodiversity loss.

The Community Resilience Fund is to yield the greatest impact on natural resource management, restoration and reforestation of habitat for native species, creating protected areas, adapting sustainable practices in agriculture, water management, waste management and recycling, as well as promoting efficiency through solar and other energy alternatives.
We forge new collaborations and strengthen grassroots-led conservation and resilience practices, such as seeds and other agricultural inputs, capital for women’s entrepreneurship, investment in collective assets such as basic infrastructure and services, capacity building opportunities and technical support, thus expanding and sustaining resilience and conservation building efforts.
We strengthen women’s and marginalized groups leadership capacity and emphasize on action-based learning such as transfer of collective knowledge of risk, risk information tools, risk governance mechanisms, and capacity to negotiate with local authorities to advance community priorities, and focus on publicly positioning grassroots women and marginalized groups as experts and leaders in the eyes of their own communities, government institutions, and other actors.
With the knowledge gained from capacity building, women lead their communities in planning key conservation projects. In addition to preserving and restoring habitats to save endangered species, we support multi-stakeholder platforms to encourage direct participation of people from the most isolated and disadvantaged communities.

An Alliance of Women for Conservation
We facilitate local, national and regional connections among women to concrete action plans to protect endangered species

Today, thanks to the Huairou Commission, and through their support, the Community Practitioner Platforms were established as a mechanism for organized communities living and working in disaster-prone urban and rural areas to play an active role in implementing the Sendai Framework and driving disaster and climate resilience agendas at local, national and regional level.
The Community Practitioners Platforms are a multi-stakeholder platform to unite groups of women, government departments, academics, conservationists, community leaders and heads of local institutions to understand their perspectives on biodiversity issues prevalent in their respective areas. The platforms facilitate grassroots community groups faced with natural hazards, climate change, and deepening poverty and inequality to advance common strategies and develop policies and collaborative initiatives that promote conservation efforts and pro-poor, resilient development.

Building Resilient Economies in Post-COVID-19 in Matabeleland North
While the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed, and made worse, deeply entrenched vulnerability and inequality in our society, it has revealed some useful lessons on how we can become more resilient and adaptable, ready to face other risks, such as climate change.
Grassroots women are indispensable in championing any change and are already innovating to build a better future.
We are facilitating long term support by:
- Building holistic resilience through working with nature, women smallholder farmers made vulnerable through climate change, biodiversity loss and the COVID 19 pandemic secure access to seeds to enhance food security, and build community seed banks that conserve agrobiodiversity to secure access for the sowing season;
- Championing nature-based solutions and hold valuable traditional knowledge, building on their decades of experience of implementing those solutions;
- Supporting on-going COVID 19 Vaccine Advocacy, targeting marginalized groups (women, people with disabilities and the rural populace).
